Product Introduction

Lagerstroemia Speciosa L. is a medicinal plant growing in India, Southeast Asia and the Philippines. Banaba Leaf Extract contains a triterpenoid compound known as Corosolic Acid. Banaba is traditionally used to brew tea of the leaves as a treatment for diabetes and hyperglycemia.

Researches indicate that the hypoglycemia effect of Banaba Leaf Extract is similar to that of insulin – which induces glucose transport from the blood into body cells.   In many cases, fluctuations in blood sugar and insulin are  related to appetite, hunger and various food cravings – particularly cravings for carbohydrates such as bread and sweets.  By keeping blood sugar and insulin levels in check, Banaba would be an effective supplement for promoting weight loss. The content of Corosolic Acid in Herbs-Ex’s products is from 1% to 20% through HPLC analysis.

Applications

1. Pharmaceutical stuff
2. Functional food and beverage
3. Food additive

Physiological Functions

1.  Lower plasma glucose levels and stimulate glucose uptake to balance blood sugar and insulin levels, which have been demonstrated in cell culture, animal and human studies. In isolated cells, the active ingredient of Banaba Extract, Corosolic Acid, is known to stimulate glucose uptake. In diabetic mice, rats and rabbits, Banaba feeding reduces elevated blood sugar and insulin levels to normal. In humans with type II diabetes, Banaba Extract, at a dose of 16-48 mg per day for 4-8 weeks, has been shown to be effective in reducing blood sugar levels (5%-30% reduction) and in maintaining tight control of blood sugar fluctuations.

2.   Control appetite and food cravings (especially carbohydrate cravings), thus promote weight loss. This is an interesting “side-effect” of tight control of blood sugar and insulin levels. Banaba significantly promotes weight loss (an average of 2-4 lbs. per month) – without significant dietary alterations.

Safety

Banaba Leaf Extract has been shown to be safe and effective as a dietary supplement to help reduce elevated levels of sugar and insulin in the blood.  No adverse side effects are found at suggested dosage of Banaba Extract. High doses should be avoided, however, to prevent possible hypoglycemic effects (headache, dizziness, fatigue) commonly associated with extremely low blood glucose levels.
